Introduction

Nordic SketchUp Webinar Series, Episode 3 - Utilize research to build sustainable projects

Daniel Fagerberg and Northway Partner have invited specialists, industry leaders, suppliers, and developers for a "panel discussion" about how we can “Build sustainable with the help of software”. We will discuss design, architecture, urban planning workflows, sustainable products, and construction suppliers and share thoughts and insights that will enable us to build a sustainable future together.

In the third episode on September 26th between 10:00 to 11:00, Daniel Fagerberg, the head architect and CEO at Strombro Building Workshop, invites Irina Martynyuk Research and Development Engineer at RISE and Juha Päätalo Architect (SAFA) and certified passive house designer. To discuss how they utilize research in different stages of a project.

Guest 2 - Juha Päätalo - Website - LinkedIn

Architect (SAFA) / certified passive house designer.

I became an architect by accident. I was living in Germany and working as a Formula One journalist when I started to long for a more down-to-earth life. Maybe I took it too literally, though, as I ended up building rammed earth walls in the factory of Martin Rauch, an earth-building pioneer in Europe, on my first summer holidays as an architecture student. Anyway, after that there was no return. Earth became my material. After I graduated in Munich in 2016, I worked for a while at NVO Architects in Munich and as an assistant of Prof. Florian Nagler at TU Munich.

For Christmas 2019, I returned to Finland after 27 years in Germany – and after spending the last four summer holidays before that building a house for me and my wife in Tampere. There, I started my own office in February 2020. Ever since then, I have been working as a full-time earth-building enthusiast, giving courses and lectures, developing new ways to build with light clay and rammed earth, and pushing the idea of prefabrication with natural materials.

About Paatalo Architects Ltd

Päätalo Architects Ltd was founded in February 2020. From the very beginning, the focus has been on natural building – materials that come from nature and last a lifetime. Clay, timber, and stone.

Another principle of the company is the site-specific approach. Genius loci and the art of proportions. And finally, the belief in prefabrication with natural materials as a key to really change the way of building.

As there wasn’t a lot in that sector, we had to invent the prefabricated building elements made of a light timber structure, filled with clay and hemp shives.

Don't take our word for it.

Heres a few words from Nordic SketchUp users! #wheninnordics

The best thing about Sketchup is that you can do everything and that.

"The best thing about Sketchup is that you can do everything and that, just like when the pen flows over the paper, I don't have to think about different commands but can focus fully on my creation."
Linus Fernström

All craftsmen would have great benefits from the SketchUp.

"I like to combine traditional craftsmanship with modern digital solutions. I use SketchUp almost daily and it helps me detect and solve problems in advance but also work smarter, be more efficient, be more sustainable and to visualize."
Anders Andlin
Sheet metal worker @ Andlins Plåt

SketchUp is the best!

"The best thing about SketchUp is the clarity, the range of Plug-ins, forums, the way to model, the compatibility with other software and the possibility to use as BIM coordination."
Daniel Fagerberg

"Thanks to SketchUp i can combine traditional craftsmanship with modern technology."

"The art of drawing is a craft in itself, but that does not make it obvious that it must be done analogically. But being able to show a drawing on a 1:1 scale to the customer and also twist and turn it in front of them or project it with AR technology directly onto reality."
Filip Berti

There is no other program that is as intuitive and user-friendly as Sketchup.

“Although it has a low threshold to start, later as you develop, the tool grows all the time. In the past, we had to wait until assembly day before we knew for sure that the frame we cut would fit together and look as it should. Today, thanks to SketchUp, i can test build the house on the computer and save ourselves the nervous wait."
